Blue Light & Vision

Blue light is everywhere with sunlight being the main source.  Indoor sources of blue light are fluorescent and LED lighting, computers, and smartphones.

The Good

Some blue light exposure is essential for good health.  It can boost alertness, aid memory and cognitive function, and elevate mood.  Blue light is very important in maintaining the body’s natural wakefulness and sleep cycle.  This is why evening screen time can make it more difficult to fall asleep.  Using features such as Apple’s Night Shift gradually reduces the blue light output from an Iphone or Ipad throughout the evening.

The Bad

The structures at the front of the eye (the cornea and lens) are very effective in blocking UV rays from damaging the back of the eye (the retina).  However, virtually all blue light passes through these structures and reaches the retina.  Research has shown that too much blue light can damage the light-sensitive cells in the retina causing premature aging of the retina.
